My wife’s seasonal job is coming to an end soon (at least as a full time income) so, shiny money will be a bit tighter again, I have been looking at ways to reduce my monthly bills.

A few weeks ago, I decided to once again take a look at my car insurance and shop it around. I had recently switched to GEICO. But, my costs were unruffled a bit higher than I wanted (especially since I wasn’t getting all the services I wanted, like roadside assistance) so I visited Progressive Insurance. As I expected, their prices were definitely cheaper for more coverage. But, the thing that ended up winning me over was their fresh Snap Shot Discount Program.

The pickle I have always had with car insurance is I feel I’m a respectable driver (at least better than most) but I never seem to glimpse any distinguished savings despite not having so worthy as a speeding label in more than a decade (unless, of course, I want to spend more money to be section of a program that might give me a discount a year or two down the road). That’s what attracted me to this program.

The Snap Shot program is free to Progressive customers. All I had to do was agree to participate in it. About a week after enrolling, I received a box in the mail that had a microscopic monitoring device that plugged into my diagnostic port and, based on the information it collected over the course of a month, I was eligible for a discount on the premiums I paid for my 2005 PT Cruiser (around 30%).

When I first got this device, I’ll admit I was a little nervous; mostly because I wasn’t really sure what they were looking for. I wondered if I would get penalized for driving 30 in a 25 MPH zone or if I forgot to turn on my headlights when it was raining. However, as I began using the device and monitoring the information (via their Web location) they were collecting, I found the only thing they were looking for was things like what time of day I drive (they don’t like drivers who do a lot of driving after midnight), how far I drive and how many times I slam on my brakes during trips (likely an indication of me driving too aggressively or not paying attention). Since I only drive about 10 miles per day, rarely drive after dark and rarely slam on my brakes, I was rewarded.

In fact, I was so impressed, after experimenting with my car, I signed up my wife’s car up for the program too.

Another thing I like about this program is the fact I do salvage to see information about my driving habits. I don’t know if it is something I would really use. But, it is interesting to see considering, before this program, I never really thought about it.

If you are looking to gash costs and are either a Progressive customer or are thinking of switching, I would recommend participating in this program. It’s a fantastic idea that more insurance companies should contemplate.
